The Testaments

The Bible consists of two major divisions called testaments. The Old Testament begins with creation and tells of things leading up to and life under the Old Covenant, a covenant God made with Israel in which He promised blessing for obedience. (Exodus 19:5) Throught the next 1500 years or so, they demonstrated their inability to overcome their sinfulness even with repeated reminders and acknowledgement of it through the requirements of tabernacle worship.

The New Testament begins with the birth of Jesus and tells of things leading up to and life under the new covenant, a covenant God made with His only begotten Son that if He would be born as a man, live a sinless life, and die a sacrificial death, He would accept that on behalf of all who will believe in Him. (Isa 42:1-7; 49:8; Jn 3:16) Even having been forgiven for his sin and living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, man again proves his inability to meet God’s demand for righteousness.
